Back to the Hein Hoppmann selectionsHein Hoppmann
(1901-1982)
Born in Rheinberg, Germany, Hein Hoppmann exhibited an early fascination for
painting ... as early as age 10. He attended the German School of Fine
Arts in Berlin and the Academy of Fine Arts, also in Berlin. He studied oil
painting with a palette knife under Michi Bibi in Munich. He went on to have
exhibitions in Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Munich, Vienna, Amsterdam and New York.
His first exhibitions around 1922 were comprised of drawings and
watercolors. From 1937 on, he only used the palette knife technique. His
subjects were numerous: landscapes, architecture, cities, ships, ports,
workers, musicians, interiors, old men, etc.
Many of his works from 1930 to 1944 are understandably missing or destroyed.
And with World War II came a noticeable darkening in his color palette ...
the paintings became dramatically dark, punctuated by color points which
seem to shine. He was a master of almost every art medium.
Hein Hoppmann is the subject of a book by Dr. Hatto Kuffman; Hein
Hoppmann - A Painter Between Tradition and Autonomy. Mr. Hoppmann's work
is part of major corporate collections throughout the world including the
private collection of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer.
Portnoy Galleries has been chosen by the Hoppmann family estate to be the exclusive
representative of his work in the United States.
